Writing A Cover Letter To Create Interest & Get You Interviewed

Let me explain why Writing a cover letter for your job application is every bit as important as getting your CV or resume just right. Many people find it difficult to get the words to say exactly what they need. Of course anybody can write letters, but the real skill is in writing a covering letter that 'forces' the reader to interview you.

  1. First of all, being different from the majority of other job applicants is what will make your letter stand out, but it must be different in the right way.

  2. Secondly, you need to instantly get the reader's attention by using an introduction to your covering letter that makes them want to read on.

If the job title is 'Administration Manager' use this title when you say: "Because my previous experience as an Administration Manager includes 'X','Y' and 'Z', I am confident that I will be an excellent candidate for your consideration..."

Using the word 'confident' in your cover letter introduction also gives your reader a different sensation...

Now, if you produce a badly written cover letter, or one that does not make the case for you, it goes without saying that you might completely ruin the chances of your application succeeding. If you could produce a really good quality cover letter, that said exactly what the recruiter needs to read, it would make the whole process of applying for jobs much easier and take away at least some of the stress of job hunting.

Did you know that your covering letter is generally the first document most potential employers will read, looking for insight into your reasons for applying. So your job is to make sure it introduces you effectively and positively, and that means that writing a cover letter is something that you cannot afford to get wrong.

Writing A Job Application Letter

Writing any job application letter has the primary job of provoking the reader's interest. Once you have their interest it must provide sufficient relevant information so that they want to know more about you and they simply have to meet you for an interview. Don't forget, a cover letter can only create interest it can't get you a job.

Now when writing a cover letter you must be sure to:

  • Customize every one so that it is specifically written for this particular job;

  • Use an easy style of language with well chosen words and no jargon;

  • Emphasize exactly how you are able to contribute to the company or organization;

  • Illustrate your knowledge, interest and enthusiasm for the advertised job;

  • Explain why you are interested in joining their organization;

  • Illustrate how your skills match the job description;

  • Check your cover letter carefully for any spelling errors or other typos;

  • Use the formal style of address when you send your letter by name to the person advertising.

How To Create Interest When Writing A Cover Letter

You will also find that when writing a cover letter you will get much better results if you always try to show that:

  • You know what employers want;
  • Your strengths have the edge over the competition;
  • You tailor your cover letter to meet their specific employer's needs.

The obvious things to avoid that point to badly written or presented letters include:

  • The same cover letter has been photocopied or obviously used for another job;

  • The cover letter doesn't attach all the information the employer requested;

  • The cover letter contains spelling, grammar or typo errors;

  • Your skills and qualifications don't match the job description or person specification;

  • No obvious effort has been made to show your interest in THIS job.
