This is how to Win the job by making a change of mind. By that I don't mean you to start dithering; I mean you need to change the way you think and start to act differently so that you win the job of your dreams.
Do You Dither in Your Job Search?
I looked up the definition of "to dither" before writing this article. It is to be agitated and in a nervous state.
My definition, however, as it relates to you, dear job seeker is that some people will spend many hours and minutes seeking a way NOT to start looking for a job. Thus, it is a neighbor of procrastination.
But "dithering" also can mean, going from one activity to another. For example: you know how important networking with contacts is when you are looking for a job then, writing down names of people to call about jobs, but never making the calls or putting your attention into other things that come along to distract you.
You can easily find all kinds of motions and actions which are made to find a job, but what happens is that they all add up to being busy and the active, productive tasks are left out.
How will someone like you stop this aimlessness and get something done on your own behalf? Setting goals with a definite time-line to achieve them, is what job seekers HAVE to do.
"Dithering" is good for butterflies and birds, but not for job seekers if you want to win the job.
When you’re looking for the new job or that career move it’s easy to think that ‘they’ hold all the cards. But I want you to try and change the way you think about it - change your mind. This one simple statement is the job search secret that will empower you to truly deserved success.
(It’s also true with so many things in life – if we could change the way we think about them – we’d probably all be a lot happier).
In order to change your thinking when you are pursuing a new career or a new job, you need to realize the truth in these two simple statements:
They don’t hire you for the sake of it; they hire you to help them make a profit!
You’ve got some skills or experience they want and after all, this is your career we’re talking about.
So try this way of thinking instead:
- Instead of thinking they’re in charge all the time, why not try ‘I’m in charge’ and act as if you are rather than being a bystander.
- Instead of waiting to be chosen from a bunch of job applicants, work out what you want and go and present some proposals to potential employers.
- Instead of living in dread of interviews, think of meeting with and influencing key decision-makers who can offer you the role you want.
- Instead of scouring the 'help-wanted' adverts, try to read them as sources of inside information; this is where you learn about organizations' needs.
- Instead of worrying about you meeting the requirements of vacancies, think of them as needs waiting to be met by you.
- Instead of having to meekly accept the offered terms, realize that you can negotiate to achieve a satisfactory salary package.
- Instead of this being one-sided and them getting what they want, understand that this is how you both get what you want.
If you’re now thinking “I can’t do that” then go back and read that again and soon you will realize that if you change your mind this is how you can win the job.
