Time for a change?
If you have been thinking about a career change, now is the time to transform those dreams into a reality. Unemployment is up, again, now tipping the 2.47 million mark, and many economists predict it will reach 2.5 million before long. The number of people claiming job seekers allowance is 1.48 million, so you do not want to become another number.
For all these unemployed millions, there were just 492,000 jobs available in May, meaning more people are fighting for every position than ever before. If you are struggling to find work along your current career path then think about how you can make yourself more employable along a new more fruitful track.
The most obvious idea is to retrain. More and more people are going back to university to learn something new or improve their current level of education. Across the board, university applications were up by 15%, although some institutions are reporting an increase of 62% in applications.
David Willetts, the Universities Minister, has pledged an extra 10,000 places this year, but this won’t be enough to meet demand. It seems that there is fierce competition both within the labour market and the further education field. But what is often more practical, both financially and for convenience, is the Open University.
The OU allows you to study from home, it doesn’t require any specific entry requirements for many of its courses and there is a huge number of courses to choose from. Furthermore, one of the biggest benefits comes from being able to study part-time or in the evenings.
For people who already have a career and family to provide for, this means you don’t have to give up your current earnings whilst you train for something better. Seeing as education can be quite expensive, this is definitely a helpful option.
However, if you are thinking of studying full-time, or perhaps scaling down your current office hours so you can study at a more rapid rate, then you might need some financial assistance. Unlike younger students, mature students don’t have the same funding and financial assistance available to them.
This means you have to raise the funds yourself. This could be tricky if your current job isn’t paying enough.
Luckily though, now is quite a good time to get a loan. The Bank of England has maintained the 0.5% base interest rate again this quarter, so there are some quite reasonable loans available. Santander offers one of the best rates on loans on the market at the moment, with just 8.9% APR on loans of £7,500 to £14,950.
