NLP and Neuro Linguistic Programming

NLP Information To Help Your Career Change

Neuro linguistic programming - NLP - is a somewhat controversial approach to psychotherapy and organizational change based on the relationship between certain patterns of behaviour and the subjective patterns of thought underlying them. Most people will recognise it as a connection between how people communicate and the terms of reference they use. The co-founders, Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder, claimed it would be instrumental in "finding ways to help people have better, fuller and richer lives".

They coined the title to denote a connection between neurological processes ( the 'neuro' part of the title), and language (the 'linguistic' part) and the associated behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience (i.e. 'programming') which can then be organized to achieve specific goals in life.

Introduction to Neuro Linguistic Programming
By Angelica C

I stumbled upon Neuro Linguistic Programming that has become so popular these days and as I pored over books and articles on the matter, I have come to deduce the effectiveness of the program based on the models of technology it employs.

In College, I chose a major on Philosophy of Linguistics. And with the introduction of logic and linguistics playing major roles in the metaphysics, the attempt to understand the world we are in can be explained using the basic tenets of Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophy.

According to Wittgenstein's philosophy, the World is the State of Affairs- consisting of facts and cognitive behavior stems from the realization of object-word relationship. The thoughts formed by our brains, deduced by our senses are interpretations of our 'State of Affairs'.

Wittgenstein argued that Names must have a reference or meaning, and such a word can only form a meaning once it is considered part of the concept. Logic is the tool in understanding linguistics.

His book on the meaning of words and its role in language are discussed thoroughly in his book, Philosophical Investigations.

Linguistics is the study of language. In many definitions, language is simply defined as a composition of pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes, smell and is conveyed through construction of words, animations, actions and stems from what we call - perception.

The Neuro Linguistic Programming works on the basis of these tenets. When logic plays a vital role in our language and communication system, all human beings capable of communicating verbally and non-verbally works within the rules of logical thinking. Programming is often defined as the ability to discover and employ sets of knowledge and capabilities to achieving what is a desired outcome and realization.

With this, Neuro Linguistic Programming works with the logical connections of thoughts and words and learning the ropes of communication of the mind to achieve what is a viable and positive result.

Neuro Linguistic Programming was first established in the 1970s by a mathematics student, Richard Bandler and a professor of linguistics, John Grinder. Both men were fascinated with human excellence and this led them to study and model the behavioral patterns of selected 'geniuses'.

As with all theories of thoughts and practical application, both started working and experimenting with models and creating patterns similar to those used by linguists and therapists. As it is based on the simple notion that communication holds meaning through the responses generated, the program has evolved to become a tool in creating positive behavior, logical and practical results for people from all walks of life.

Therefore, the NLP is a behavioral technology that is a good tool in creating set guidelines and principles that gives one the upper hand in the way life or state of affairs will run for him. What makes this program positive for all individuals is that it allows people to realize the power of their minds to shift perceptions and maneuver behavior towards the positive.

As such, the program has become a popular tool in business and marketing, psychology and counseling, corporate cultural changes, sports performance and yes, personal development and coaching.

Providing improvements in communication skills, trained professionals showed a construction of a better life attitude with a better control of what we normally considered as brain responses.

As a technology, NLP has an amazing track record for instigating fast and efficient change in individuals and groups. Many people study NLP to help them become more effective in their chosen field.

There is a vast amount of excellent training manuals and programs available that can literally change the lives of those willing to study this fascinating subject.

The NLP Toolbox is an ebook containing a wealth of easily understood techniques for positive change. If you're a practitioner, or if you're interested in finding out more about the power of NLP, the NLP Toolbox is a 'must have'.

A word of caution though: this subject is rarely discussed in learned textbooks and has limited number of journal articles dedicated. Most often, neuro linguistic programming has been taught via short seminars and workshop, audio programs and books in a variety of application areas rather than at university, although it is sometimes taught at continuing educational colleges connected to university. A small number of universities offer postgraduate courses in neuro-linguistic programming in the United Kingdom, and in Australia a postgraduate course is accredited. You must make your own decision as to whether it can help you achieve your goals.
