Job satisfaction is closely related to the type of job that you do, the nature of the job and your perceived status. In other words if you like what you do and feel that your job is worthwhile, you probably fall into the category of being satisfied with the job.
On this page I outline some of the types of jobs that most often give rise to job satisfaction and follow that by saying that these jobs should perhaps be high on your list of potential jobs or careers if you are changing career.
Job Types & Population
Approximately 3% of the total population are professional people, very senior managers in business or commerce or top-level civil servants.
Another 20% are in Middle management as executives in large organisations, with appropriate qualifications. Principal officers in local government and civil service. Top management or owners of small business concerns, educational and service establishments.
Junior management, or owners of small establishments, and all others in non-manual positions account for 28% of the total population. Jobs in this group have very varied responsibilities and educational requirements.
21% of the population are skilled manual workers, and those manual workers with responsibility for other people, and about 18% are semi-skilled and un-skilled manual workers, apprentices and trainees to skilled workers.
The remaining 10% of the population are entirely dependent on the state long-term, through sickness, unemployment, old age or other reasons. Those unemployed for a period exceeding six months and casual workers and those without a regular income.

Job Satisfaction Factors
What makes you feel satisfied with your job? Look out for these top 5 factors and if you don't see them in your job opportunity then it may be better to search for something else.
1. The job is varied in pace and activity and allows you to change pace with different activities.
2. You have control over how you plan your work so can do it most effectively, without wasted effort or energy.
3. You have a reasonable degree of authority over how your work should be done, without being too closely supervised, or rigidly managed. 4. Employees believe they have adequate opportunities for individual growth and recognition.
5. You can see the purpose of your job as an integral part of the whole enterprise and you are treated as an individual, not just a 'production unit'.
So, if you are to enjoy your job and give your best for the organization it must ensure that the tasks are not monotonous, routine, or mundane and designed in a way that gives you a reasonable degree of authority, responsibility and freedom to perform the way you would like.
Job satisfaction would soar if every job matched these 5 criteria. However, in reality other factors come into play:
In surveys, after salary, the key factors for people less than 30 years of age were:
- Advancement for salaried men
- Meaningful work for salaried women
- Job security for hourly paid men
- Benefits for hourly paid women
In their 30s, the key factors are different for salaried men and women, but stayed the same for hourly paid people. After salary, the key factor to job satisfaction for people in their 30s were:
- Flexible work options for salaried men
- Work/Life balance for salaried women
- Job security for hourly paid men
- Benefits for hourly paid women
In their 40s, the key factors changed once again for all categories except for hourly paid women. After salary, the key factor to job satisfaction for people in their 40s were:
- Job security for salaried men
- Opportunity to learn and grow for salaried women
- Benefits for both hourly paid men and women
Because job satisfaction is so closely related to the type of job that you do, the nature of the job and your ability to set your own working pace, you will probably feel that your job is worthwhile, regardless of which category of job type you are in. However if you are considering a career change, you should consider the list of job types which tend to create the maximum job satisfaction.
