Interview Techniques That Win More Job Offers

Interview Techniques Help For Your Career Change

Interview techniques can make or break your interview, so I wrote this article about some techniques to help you focus on the 'crux' of what most interviews are really all about and to try to expose the inadequacies of many interviewers. Further down the page there are some clever interview tips that anybody can learn and apply quite easily. Anything that gives you an (unfair) advantage is OK with me. See the offer on my interview e-book down the page, but remember that a good CV and cover letter should be your first priority, otherwise you may not even get an interview.

We often credit interviewers with superior interview techniques that we think will uncover our weaknesses without them breaking sweat. But that's not really the case. Read on...

Winning Interview Techniques - Your Advantage

By Peter Fisher

When preparing for interview, It may come as a surprise to some interviewees, but many of the interviewers you are going to meet are pretty much useless and most of the others are totally unprepared or incompetent. They are not the ruthless, efficient inquisitors you may think they are; this is great because with our advice you can turn this to your advantage.

Remember that interviewers are human and can sometimes suffer from interview nerves. They can dry up if things go badly. A good interview is a two way process, a conversation not an inquisition.

So, if you take the time to prepare you’ll probably have done more work than the interviewer; try to be as close as possible to your normal self. Do not be afraid of humour and listen carefully to what the other person is saying.

I'm going to show you an interview technique to turn this to your advantage and how you can be better prepared than they are. This means YOU take charge of the interview, but they probably won't even realize it.

Most interviews ultimately revolve around just 2 things:

(a) whether the interviewer feels comfortable with, or likes you and

(b) how easily they can justify the decision (or not) to hire you.

Now with our interview techniques you can help them with both part (a) and (b) of their decision making by working on your rapport with the interviewer which demonstrates 'compatibility' and by providing solid reasons to select and hire you.

Part (a) - Rapport is a personal thing but it helps to show genuine interest if you use the interviewer's name (so remember it!), smile sometimes and make good eye contact throughout the meeting. At the end of the interview always thank the interviewer for their time and say you hope to meet again.

Part (b) - The decision needs justifying and if you give them the ammunition to justify their decision, you put yourself in the strongest possible position.

All interviews comprise a series of questions and sometimes tests to establish a basis for employing you, but what it all boils down to is these five things:

- Why do you want this job?

- What makes you think you are right for the job?

- What benefits will we get from hiring you?

- What personality traits do you have (will you fit in)?

- How much will it cost us (to employ, maybe train) to hire you?

So to get your advantage, you must prepare for this and that means rehearsing questions related to every part of these 5 areas.

Now think about this. If the interviewer asks you these questions, you're ready. If the interviewer is useless and doesn't ask the right questions, you can grab the advantage by saying "may I tell you something about myself".

Your advantage is there to be seized, grab and go for it. This is how you get more job offers.

Interview Tips - do's and dont's:

• Don't tell your whole life story - they really want to know what you can do.

• Keep to simple language and be easy to understand. No shortcuts or jargon.

• Try to make it sound interesting. Let the interviewer enjoy your accomplishments.

• Credit the interviewer with having read your CV. (Even if he hasn't)

• Be specific; cite facts. Don't fall into the "I've got a lot to offer" trap. Say exactly what you've got to offer.

• Quantify your results - numerically, if possible.

• Gently dramatize the problem so your results can be important.

• Use I, not we. Claiming an accomplishment ain't bragging if you did it. And it's you they might hire!

• Use concrete examples.

• Tell what you did that is unique. Leave out the methodology unless they ask how you did it

• Be relevant to the interviewer’s questions.

• Always make a point which favours your cause.

• Help the listener conclude. Tell him/her what is relevant about your accomplishment; ‘which means that…’

Yes there's a lot to think about, but these interview tips will stay with you once you've read them through.
