Get Promoted To Boss: 6 Qualities You Need

Our Career Help Is Here For You & Your Career Change

How To Get Promoted To Being The Boss...

To get promoted to being the boss, you need to have certain qualities which bosses possess and many people also possess without knowing it.

Its said that bosses are born, not made so if you have what it takes you could get promoted to boss. It is also the case that there are some bosses who really should not be bosses. See what you think whether you have the 6 qualities you need. You could also measure your own boss against these six qualities.

1. A good boss has to be both a 'real' person and to be trustworthy. This is someone who "walks the talk" and earns respect for their good character and the example they set.

2. A good boss is contagiously enthusiastic about their work and a constant source of new ideas and inspiration. The boss also needs to be seen to be working with the team towards the goal, even though having higher level responsibilities. The boss who is well-respected will be prepared to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty.

3. A good boss is confident. In order to lead and set direction a boss needs to appear confident as a person and in the position held. Such a person can inspire confidence in other people and draw out the best efforts of the team for the benefit of the organisation.

4. A boss also needs to function in an orderly and purposeful manner in situations of uncertainty. People look to the boss during times of uncertainty and unfamiliarity and find reassurance and security when the boss portrays personal characteristics of a boss such as confidence and a positive demeanor.

5. A good boss knows that second best does not lead to success. The good boss sets and maintains high standards while carefully raising the bar in order to achieve continuous improvement in all areas.

6. A good boss, as well as keeping the main goal in focus, is able to think analytically. Not only does a good boss view a situation as a whole, but is able to break it down into smaller parts for closer inspection. While keeping the main objective in view, a good boss can establish manageable steps and make progress one step at a time.

Of course, just possessing those 6 qualities you need won't het you promoted to boss, you have to put yourself into the line of consideration and demonstrate that you could be boss.

If You Get Promoted To Boss

So if you get promoted to being the boss, what next? What is more important, leadership or teamwork?

Making all the decisions or working on a consensus? We hear a lot about teams, team-building, and teamwork on the one hand and management by consensus on the other. Although both teamwork and consensus building are critical skills in a boss, neither are substitutes for capable leadership itself.

What really is being a boss all about?

The way I see it is: "Being able to direct a group a people in the creation and successful attainment of a shared vision."

In which case, leadership, teamwork, and consensus are all important. In order to have effective teamwork and productive and real consensus, strong capable leadership is what the boss must be capable of. But that does not mean authoritarian or tyrannical rule.

To get promoted to boss is quite an achievement and if you have the desire and the six qualities above, you could get that promotion if you want it. Just remember that being the boss is mostly about being yourself and maintaining your personal authenticity rather than about learning some formula from a text book. Real bosses need to be always true to themselves; not slavishly following other's ideas.

When you get promoted to boss, you may need some new skills, but now you are in a position to do something about it; you need to know what this "secret art of leadership" is all about.

Have you just been promoted and have no idea how to manage your new team? Or maybe you're already a manager but your team won't listen to you and your boss is not impressed?

If so you need a quick makeover to get control of you situation right now. I recommend that you download this helpful 'How To Be A Boss' e-book.
