Your
Engineer Cover Letter must get you to an interview so that you can convince the hiring manager of your suitability for the job in person. The letter can not get you the job, only you can do that.
This is the MOST essential part of your engineer's job search and job application process. And you need to realize that your letter is not just something to send with your CV (get tips for writing your own technical engineer CV by clicking the link which will open a new window) - it is your SALES letter and must contain the relevant data about you that will make the reader want to meet you in person.
Please review the format in which the cover letter below is written and see if you can note all the essential points that any good cover letter needs to contain. Your cover letter does not need to be **salesy** nor does it need to be flowery, but it must be interesting enough to reassure the hiring manager that you will not be a waste of precious time to interview.
The Engineer's Cover Letter Should:
- Be properly addressed with contact details clear;
- Have a banner headline in bold typeface which identifies the Job title, reference number and publication - some companies may be advertising several positions in different papers so this leaves no doubt;
- Avoid starting each sentence with “I” (causes I-strain if overdone!!)
- Simple, clear 1-page letter layout;
- Positive and reassuring tone throughout;
- Bullet points (max 5) matched to key requirements in advert;
- When addressed to a name, ends with “yours sincerely”;
- This engineer cover letter exudes interest and confidence because those words are actually used;
- The letter layout complies with instructions and requirements from the original advert i.e. salary, location, CV enclosed;
- You will see it ends confidently – this engineer expects to be interviewed. (This is quite acceptable; you know you meet the requirements so they will want to see you.)
