There are times when you need a great email cover letter to follow up with a recruitment consultant with whom you have been speaking. To help you along, I've given you two example cover letters on this page.
The first cover letter example on this page is of an "Informal" nature, mostly for when you've already been in contact with the recruiter, while the second example letter is for a "Formal" version of the email cover letter. This type of letter example will be used when you are applying for an advertised job opening.
Although they may not at the time be handling any relevant assignments, your prior telephone conversation has led them to ask for your CV. In order to remind them of the discussion and your background, you need to send an email that places the talk you had back in their mind.
Because it's being sent by email and you have already spoken to the consultant, it's OK to be relatively informal and use the consultant's first name. You can get quite a lot of information into a short email, so there is every probability that you will get their attention when a suitable job comes up.
A Speculative Email Cover Letter
Informal Email Cover Letter Begins...
Hi Peter, It's Bal Zukowski; when you called me a couple of weeks ago, you very kindly agreed to accept my CV for your database I have now updated it and attach it to this email.
In my career to date, I have held a variety of different roles across a broad spectrum within the retail and financial services sectors and have been able to prove my competence in the introduction of HR strategic and operational management into established and 'greenfield' sites. Most recently, I have concentrated on leading and motivating HR business partners in a climate of transition and change. To take a specific example of this, I was appointed HR Director of Aventura Corporate Services Ltd. the company which was created from the collapsed National Insurance Company Ltd.
Following a period of crisis management involving the implementation of c.1000 redundancies, I worked with the CEO and the senior operational team to effect major cultural change via HR strategies across areas such as management/employee learning and development, organisation development and performance management, reward and recognition and improved communication structures. The delivery of such HR solutions led to a variety of commercial successes including the support and recognition of our efforts by the client, the attainment of new outsourcing contracts, retention and motivation of colleagues, the lowering of the cost base and ongoing attainment of customer satisfaction.
I regard myself as having the right personal traits to contribute effectively in a senior HR role. I can supply exemplary references showing that I operate commercially and that I am an effective leader and an energetic and hands-on team player, committed to attaining team and personal results. I have led teams across multi-sited locations, am an accomplished communicator, demonstrating diplomacy and able to influence at all levels. As a Fellow of the CIPD I am technically competent to handle the more complex of employee relations issues including the handling of TUPE situations.
My current package is £65,000 pa inclusive of benefits. I am flexible with regard to travel and I am also flexible regarding location and will relocate speedily for the right role. I have a 3 months notice period, which I believe to be negotiable.
Peter, perhaps you could let me know if you can consider me for anything at the moment or if you know of anything that is in the pipeline.
Many thanks for your assistance,
With kind regards,
Bal Zukowski.
Informal Email Cover Letter Ends...
Writing Your Formal eMail Cover letter
Writing an email cover letter in this way acts as a gentle reminder to the consultant that you have already spoken about job possibilities and is more likely to create a positive response from him /her. These consultants are
NOT acting on your behalf, as they are driven by the client assignments they receive and will tend to ignore people that chase them for jobs they don't have.
Of course if you are sending your CV and cover letter by email for an advertised job opening, you should still apply the normal principles of good letter writing to your email - just because its going electronically doesn't mean that you can ignore the rules of letter etiquette. This is an example of a formal email cover letter:
