CV Writing Information And Advice For Your Career Change

This CV Writing and CV Tips section of Your-Career-Change.com will help you to achieve your career objectives by showing you how to create your own first-class CV. But don't leave it until you need a CV urgently, keep yours updated regularly. On this site you will find CV templates and CV examples to copy. Follow my guidance for the best CV layout and you will be able to prepare your own CV to the highest standard - way in front of the majority of people who write their own CV.

There are lots of CV Examples at the foot of this page you can copy to help you with your own CV preparation, or see the links on the right for my CV writing services.

Ways to Write Your CV

Don't be like so many people who only start to write their CV when they are actively looking for a new job, I've included masses of job search and career change information so just have a good look around my website to find what you want. This information is drawn from my years of practical experience as a career coach. I'll also show you how to adapt your CV to make the most of your existing CV.

If you're going to write your own CV, please take some time to understand why I recommend they are written in a certain way; my experience comes from years of recruiting people both as a Recruitment Consultant and as an employer, so I have seen and written thousands of CVs and know what is needed.

My CV help and information on how to make a CV is here because your CV is one of the most important tools to help you to win a job interview. Your CV is your best chance to show an employer that you have got the skills and experience they require, and it also shows that you’re the right person for the job. Check my specific Executive CV Tips for higher level assistance.

Perhaps you're writing your first ever CV or updating an existing one, this CV help will answer your questions about what to include, how to make a CV that works, what words to use in your CV and how to lay it all out so that it looks good as well as being interesting.

What makes a great CV?

There is no absolutely 'right' or 'wrong' way for you to write and present your CV because many styles and CV formats can work equally well, but if you bear the following CV help in mind it will work best for you:

  • Your CV should be targeted at the specific job or career area for which you are applying;
  • Your CV must bring out the relevant skills you have to offer;
  • Your CV should be carefully and clearly laid out, set out logically and easy to read;
  • Your CV must be informative but concise and to the point;
  • Your CV must be accurate in content, spelling and grammar;
  • Your CV should generally cover no more than two sides of A4 paper.

Sometimes, for example, with new graduates it is OK to summarise your career history on a single side of paper. However, you must be careful no to leave out important information which may be relevant. Some CVs, for example, for academic and scientific appointments, may be up to 4 sides long, to include research papers and publications information, read my CV help for more information.

Presenting Your CV:

  • Your CV should be carefully and clearly laid out with enough 'white space' for it not to appear cramped. See this CV sample. Use a bold typeface for individual section headings and employer details/dates.

  • Keep it brief but relevant - your CV is merely to get the reader's attention and interest. Adding too much information about exams and training courses can make for tedious reading.

  • Be positive - its OK to write confidently and to highlight your strong points. For example, when listing your achievements, show what you actually did and use numbers to make it more convincing wherever possible.

  • Be honest - you might omit some details which you would prefer the employer not to know about, but do not lie on your CV and you must never knowingly give inaccurate or misleading information, because it will backfire on you at some point.

  • A good CV usually works best if you produce a summary profile at the beginning. The reader will skim this first to get a flavour of your experience, so make sure that this profile contains essential information about your level of responsibility and sector experience.

CV & Resume Builder

With my CV help you will get away from a one-size-fits-all approach to your CV, because in today's competitive job market you need to produce a 'customized' CV that you can tailor to highlight your benefits to each particular company.

How To Make Your CV Stand Out

You will soon discover how to make a CV that stands out and that CV and resume writing is partially science and partially art, so you may need to change your writing style to produce the most compelling document that demands a reaction from the reader. Try to think about your CV and resume writing in the way a copywriter produces a glossy brochure for new cars or exotic holidays; the intention is to produce desire and action!!

CV Layout

My recommended CV layout is quite straightforward and most people will find that if they follow this idea they can produce a very good CV that gets results.

All you really want from your CV is that it gets read by the person you send it to. That may be the hiring manager or personnel officer at the firm you're writing to, but if it doesn't get read, you are going no further!

Interview Winning CV

This CV Help and CV Tips section of Your-Career-Change.com is all about helping you to achieve your own career objectives by helping you to create your own first-class CV. But don't leave it until you need a CV urgently, keep yours updated regularly.

Most people will only start to write their CV when they are actively looking for a new job, so we've included masses of job search and job changing information too; just have a good look around my website: Your Career Change.com to find what you want.

Improve Your CV

The perfect CV is impossible to create because there are so many factors that depend upon the reader rather than the CV writer. You can analyze their intentions very carefully, but you cannot predict with absolute certainty exactly what they are thinking. So I can show you how to write an effective CV (or write a CV for you), but trying for perfection is not wasted, the effort should at least improve your CV to get better results from your CV writing.

Perhaps you've already been trying? Its quite understandable because it seems that everywhere you look someone is telling you how to write a perfect CV.

But you really can get an improved CV. Take a look at this CV Template which is suitable for most types of CV and will improve your CV writing efforts if you follow the layout.

Cover Letter Writing

Everyone who is looking for a job and sends out their CV or resume NEEDS a Cover Letter. It is not an option, you must use one - some recruiters and agencies will reject any job application without a cover letter. As a professional, you should have a well written cover letter, and you should send one with every CV or resume you submit. If you need a cover letter quickly, you will find lots of examples to copy in my Career Changer's Guide.

Writing a CV Takes a Certain Skill

Writing your CV is more than just listing your past jobs; your CV writing skill can be the key to winning a new job, so if you need help with your CV it may be more cost efficient to get a professional CV writer on the case.

The professional CV writer recognizes that what works best is a CV that is easy to read, so cramming too much information on the page is out, as is using jargon that people do not understand. If the reader can easily follow what has been written, it makes their job quicker and in turn you are more likely to be the one called in for an interview.

Writing a CV yourself can mean that you lack the necessary objectivity to really focus your CV on the skills that are most relevant for the job application in hand. Although you may be particularly proud of some of your achievements, they may not be the best ones to illustrate your suitability and knowing what to include as well as what to leave out may be difficult. For example, should you use a career objective statement or not?

Find out why CVs and Resumes sometimes get in the way of your career change success.

You know that every vacancy attracts dozens, if not hundreds of applications and those other people are your direct competition. Look at it from the employer's point of view; faced with all those CVs, what are they going to do to reduce the number to a manageable level? The answer is that they use the pile of documents to filter OUT any candidate whose CV is difficult to read, is scruffy in presentation or does not APPEAR to have the right experience. Most personnel officers do not have sufficient knowledge to understand the relevance of every bit of information you present to them, so if it is not in exactly the right format, your CV will probably be rejected at the first reading, so it pays to get your CV writing just right.

Equally, too many people include everything they can think of on the basis that the more detail included has to be a good thing, because the answers to all the questions lie in there somewhere. But when the initial sift is conducted, your CV must pass to the next stage within less than 30 seconds and that means that only relevant detail can be included. Too much and the reader won't be bothered to look for it and find it.

So, writing a CV is about knowing precisely what the employer is looking for and writing it in such a way that the information is immediately accessible while demonstrating that YOU, the job candidate, has the existing skills and future potential to be an outstanding employee. See what to do at Executive CV Presentation which shows you the 5 important elements to include for maximum impact. Your CV must gain some serious attention and immediately grab the reader. If your CV is just average, there will be plenty of others whose CVs are well above average in this competitive environment, so you need to be able to make yours shine out.

I recommend that if you decide to get help with writing a CV, employ a professional CV writer who has demonstrable experience in writing effective CVs. Please do not make the decision on price alone, although there may be some very good CV writers at the bottom of the price scale, you may find that your CV is farmed out to low paid contractors who cannot create the CV you need. When you consider the available CV writing services, look for one who will work with you to ensure your satisfaction and offer a money back guarantee.

Crucially, I also suggest that you look for the CV writing business owner who does all the writing personally and has the background and credentials to create the CV that will enhance your job applications. That way you are giving yourself the best chance of getting the new job you want much more quickly - and that means money in the bank sooner.

Focusing Your CV Writing

You must not waste employers' time by making them work out what your CV is trying to tell them. Communicate clearly and concisely what will be of relevance to them by understanding the job requirements. As a potential employee you are far more interesting if you can convince the prospective employer that you have the personal qualities they require and the skills they want.

Before you start writing your CV, prepare lists of your skills and achievements.

They should normally cover the following four separate areas:

1. Education and qualifications - concentrating on secondary education and beyond.

2. Work experience - think about the skills you needed for, and gained from, these posts. Transmit a sense of achievement, say what you accomplished in your work. Show evidence of any leadership or problem solving skills you used.

Skills can be described in these three main areas:

• Functional skills which you use to deal with the world around you e.g. people, data, things, ideas.

• Personal skills that you use to manage yourself.

• Technical skills that you use and develop for aspects of your job.

3. Non-work related skills, such as positions of responsibility in your community or membership of a sports team.

4. Other skills such as holding a driving licence, Prince's Trust Award, language skills, and anything like the ECDL which you may have gained.

Something that certainly helps to get the right level of interest in anyones CV are the CV Personal Profiles which create an immediate impression of what will follow. A Profile is the first thing recruiters and employers will read and is a must-do for CV writing.
