Cover Letters Must Get You Noticed: Here's How...

Your Cover letters are personal introductions that are crucial to the success of your job search. Great letters should be good enough to capture the hiring manager's attention and entice her to read on and bring you in for interview.

Because there are so many different ways to write your application letter, what is really important is that you quickly get the attention of whoever is reading your letter, possibly the hiring manager, so that she wants to find out more - and the way to do that is to call you in for an interview. Please refer to these good letter examples which will help you create superb job application letters for yourself.

You should also remember that some recruiters prefer to ignore your application letters and read the CV first, so you must also make sure that your CV is professionally written.

Understand this: If you are applying to anybody for a job, whether the job has been advertised or not, your letter is more important than your CV or Resume - because its usually read first - so if you want a successful career move you cannot afford to get this wrong, so please read all of the covering letter advice on this site and elsewhere before you start.

Your letter is generally the first document most potential employers will read, looking for insight into your reasons for applying. So your job is to make sure your application letter introduces you effectively and positively. To do that you must clearly show how you add value through the transferable skills and personal strengths you bring to the new job.

Please read what I think about speculative letter writing as opposed to using a direct approach letter when there has been no advertised job, but its worth making yourself known.

Expertly Writing Your Own Cover Letters

The basic rules are quite straightforward, yet it's surprising how some people burst into 'flowery' language as soon as they start to write a letter. Why people suddenly change their vocabulary at this point is beyond me; perhaps there is some desire to show off their idea of a highly tuned sense of language. If you are likely to get drawn that way just try this:

Why would you say something like this?

"I enclose my curriculum vitae for your perusal wherein I have enumerated my expertise..."

Yet some people write it!!

Resist the temptation, keep it simple and your application letters will be great. I promise, just stick to these guidelines.

1. You must customize every cover letter so that it is specifically written for this particular job;

2. Use an easy style of language with carefully chosen ‘trigger’ words and no jargon;

3. Emphasize exactly how you are able to contribute to the company or organization;

4. Illustrate your knowledge, interest and enthusiasm for the advertised job;

5. Explain why you are interested in joining their organization;

6. Illustrate how your skills match the job description;

Please don't make the mistake of telling the employer what they can do for YOU or YOUR career, rather it MUST be what you can do for their organization. Simply stated, employers care only about your qualifications and what you can do for their organizations. Do not waste your time telling the company how working for them can be great for your career.

What your potential employers want to hear is how you can benefit their team and add value; they want to know what you can bring to the party that is innovative, and focused on results. Make sure that your covering letters let your potential new employers know just why you are the best candidate for the job and that your letter and CV together highlight what is relevant.
