Are you sure that you are ready to change your career?
I'm not too surprised, because as many as 7 in 10 people would change their career without hesitation if it was possible to do and not not lose sleep or money over it.
A lot of my readers tell me they are more determined than ever because they feel forced into a making a change of job, with the economy being the number 1 reason.
PMA + SMA = Career Change Success (what does this mean?)
I am certain that you, along with so many others, have thought about ways to change your career that could involve working from home or becoming self-employed or trying your hand at something entirely new, maybe to cut down on the commute, or try to earn more money or because you want to reduce your carbon footprint by working in your own home office.
Judging by the number of internet searches, working at home is probably the most commonly proposed idea to start over with your career, promising as it does the opportunity to be your own boss and to work at something which may revitalise your working life, just because it's different.
However my advice is DON'T jump too quickly!
I understand why so many people want to go down that route, which most often involves an internet business, but before you do read my Career Change Success Formula on this page because the fact of the matter is that most people will NOT be able to replace their full time income in under two years by going into something different from what you have been doing in your regular career.
Instead let me show you the surest and easiest ways to change your career, get it back on top form and enhance your income through changes to your existing job. Build that up first THEN you can start to think about a move into the world of something new from a stronger foundation.
When you approach it this way, you're going to feel good again about your job and career; you'll get a renewed sense of career satisfaction from it and I promise you that you can do it if you believe in yourself.
To change your career, work on the job you have (unless you don't have one in which case start at my top jobs job search engine page) and start by changing small aspects of it.
To do this you need to think about how to:
When you change your career is your decision, but throwing away what you already have is definitely not the wisest decision in these uncertain times, so follow this advice and change the easier parts first, then you can decide what follows as the next stage of your career.
My Career Change Success Formula
Simply stated there are only two things stopping you from the career change success you dream of, and they come down to: belief and action. Or in my terms:
PMA + SMA = Career Change Success
But everyone goes on about PMA - Positive Mental Attitude, dont they? What does it mean?
To some extent we all have some influence over the things that happen to us. I dont mean to say that we can make everything work out right all of the time, but we can hold an attitude of expecting things to go right.
It also means belief in yourself; that you have the skills and experience; qualities and attributes that will benefit a new employer. The one who wins isnt necessarily the one who can, but the one who thinks he can. So if you are going to make that career change, you must think you can.
Belief in yourself is also about being true to yourself and your core values. Its not about short-term gains, acing interviews or finessing your way into a high-paying job that youve no real hope of holding down. The move you make must be consistent with your core values otherwise you wont achieve that all important career satisfaction. If you get there by the wrong means, youll probably end up as one of the four in ten again!
So you should start your career change process by being clear in your mind about:
- what you really enjoy doing;
- what makes your work satisfying, great fun, fraught, or dull;
- what youre good at and want to continue doing;
- whats important to you;
- and how your decisions affect those close to you.
You can work out the answers to these questions from my advice on your skills analysis, your contributions and your values - then your career change becomes career reality!
But only if you use the second part of my formula SMA by which I mean Sustained Meaningful Activity. In other words do the things you need to do, for as long as you need to do them, until the career change you want to achieve becomes your career change success story.
What Does The Formula Tell You?
- Follow all the advice you can get and be clear that you have the skills and capacity to present a compelling case to a new employer.
- Work out how you will make your case come alive by preparing scenarios and stories that colourfully illustrate how your experience brings value and benefits to the new organization.
- Be prepared for disappointment you may not get there first time but kepp a positive attitude and dont just give up. Move on to the next one right away.
- Build up your network of people who can support, advise and challenge you; most people will be very pleased to help.
- Get your CV or resume updated and reviewed by someone you respect.
- Research potential businesses that may have the right type of opportunity, but are also likely to be consistent with your values.
- Ask some closing questions at interview so you can gauge whether the opportunity is right or simply there.
- Make sure your writing skills are up to the task of producing not only excellent application cover letters, but also carefully crafted target letters for the direct approach to employers.
- Be clear how you can access the unadvertised jobs market to find hidden jobs, by networking, research and targeting.
- Maintain your confidence and optimism and never quit, give up or give in you know you can do it, so keep going till you get there.
It will be worth it!
