When you are looking for a new executive position, a Bespoke Curriculum Vitae is what you need and is the one thing you cannot afford to get wrong. Customized job applications demand the effort of an individually prepared Curriculum Vitae every time.
This is not just your qualifications and employment history, it is your primary tool for advertising yourself to an interested buyer of your services. The prospective employer needs to understand from it your suitability and it could mean the difference between whether they choose you or another applicant.
Preparing Your Bespoke Curriculum Vitae
When preparing your Curriculum Vitae, you must make sure it is tailored to stand out above the rest. Although the information contained in it is absolutely crucial to your success, it should also be easy on the eyes and appealing to look at, making the evaluating personnel want to read it. The best way to achieve that is to make sure the page is well laid out with lots of white space so that it is easy to read. This immediately means that you need to edit it ruthlessly so that only relevant information is included and your document is succinct. The second part of this exercise is to make sure your Curriculum Vitae describes the relevant experience you have had in relation to the job for which you are applying.
A bespoke Curriculum Vitae will avoid being too long and that means definitely no more than two to three pages. Any longer than that and you are certainly including too much information that may may make it irrelevant to the evaluator.
Remember when applying for a new post, that the employer is also a person for whom time is important. If you show that you recognize this by providing the most relevant information in a time sensitive manner, you will have won one important battle.
What To Include
The heading of your Curriculum Vitae should contain only your name, address and contact information. The body of the Curriculum Vitae should then be broken down into the following sections:
- career objective;
- personal profile or summary;
- professional experience;
- your achievements;
- education & qualifications;
- and a statement about references.
Do not add testimonials or lists of your publications. Do not refer the reader to your personal web site or other online entity. This is entirely about creating sufficient interest for them to ask you to attend an interview.
The job-specific career objective statement is a clear statement of intent, so spell it out by saying exactly what job you are pursuing. This way there is no confusion about what you want to do from the start of the Curriculum Vitae.
Your personal profile or summary should only contain a few well-written sentences that convey what you can bring to the table in terms of the specific job. Use this section to attract the employer’s attention, but don’t go overboard in trying to be creative – stay professional.
Your experience listing should include information on one to five jobs you’ve held, starting with your current or last job, and listing previous positions in reverse chronological order. In general anything prior to 10 years ago can be a summary entry only.
Checking For Errors
You must make sure that your Curriculum Vitae is error free – double check your grammar and spelling, make sure that all company and brand names and cities are spelled properly. A Curriculum Vitae containing errors, no matter how small, will give your potential employer an impression that lack attention to detail, that you don’t take time to double check your work, and that you are a poor communicator. Additionally, make sure that your Curriculum Vitae is formatted well. Stick to basic fonts, like Arial and Times New Roman. Keep the presentation simple with font size in the 10 - 12 range and use black print on white paper; don’t use large fonts other than for a main heading or use multi-colors in your document.
Writing a bespoke Curriculum Vitae yourself can mean that you lack the necessary objectivity to really focus it on the skills that are most relevant for the job application in hand. Although you may be particularly proud of some of your achievements, they may not be the best ones to illustrate your suitability and knowing what to include as well as what to leave out may be difficult.
