Job Searching and Professionals

Hello

Job Searching and Professionals

Thank you for being a regular reader of my newsletters.

Job searching for professionals is in many ways more difficult than for mainstream jobs because there are far fewer jobs at the right level and it is less easy to cross into the private sector from the public sector.

Professional occupations are more affected than ever before, such as:

  • Accountants
  • Architects
  • Chartered Engineers
  • Company Directors
  • Lawyers
  • Quantity Surveyors
  • Senior Public Servants

People in the roles may have expectations that are higher and may also be more confident that a new job will be forthcoming very quickly when compared to traditional mainstream jobs. After all having had a good number of years when future employment prospects felt entirely certain, why shouldn't they feel confident about their next job?

Unfortunately, a new economic era means that more people with professional backgrounds and qualifications, are feeling the same cold wind of unemployment and whilst they may be able to weather the immediate financial effects, they will need to replace that lost income before too long.

Many professionally qualified job hunters still think that working the numbers and sending out large numbers of job applications is the way to go; but with the unemployment rate increasing across all economies, the competition is just getting bigger and stronger. It also means that more and more people are sending out those job application letters as their main job search activity and any organization that IS hiring is becoming overwhelmed with job seekers who are desperate.

My professionals' job search ideas are based on my long experience of working as career counselor and outplacement consultant to public and private organizations and the ideas are my way of helping you to deal with the consequences of unexpected unemployment.

Unlike the public sector, more jobs in the private are filled by personal contacts than through any other means and in these times, companies would much prefer to save the recruitment fees and act on recommendations from people they trust, so whether you like it or not job searching for professionals will inevitable involve networking with known and newly-introduced contacts in person. My own guide to networking and finding unadvertised jobs will give you step by step instructions in how to to do this effectively.

In the professional job search arena, you have to create the right impression of you both as a person and as a professional, and the first impression is most often created by how you appear 'on paper'. Which simply put means that your CV and your covering letters have to be the very best possible. I would also add that neither one is more important than the other.

If you know anyone who is currently struggling to get back into work, please put them in touch or ask them to visit jobsearch for professionals for more information.
